Removing Ice Dams & How to Prevent Them

With the cold winter weather still among us, it’s not uncommon to experience ice dams inside and outside your home. If you’ve experienced ice dams before you may be wondering if there’s a way to prevent it from happening again or how you can remove any you presently have.

This guide will take you through the best methods for removing ice dams and provide you with the best options for prevention. Let’s get into it!

What Are Ice Dams?

So what are ice dams anyway? Homeowners who live in a cold climate will experience lots of snow through the winter months and unfortunately, it can sometimes result in damage to the home. Ice dams occur when a large mass of ice forms at the edge of a roof and prevents snow and other debris from sliding off the roof, onto the ground below. When this happens, water can become backed up on that section of the roof and sometimes ends up leaking into the home.

If you aren’t aware of how to avoid ice dams, you’ll typically only realize there’s an issue once it’s too late. They can damage the walls, ceilings and insulation of your home so it’s crucial to prepare your home beforehand to avoid dealing with all of the mess!

How to Prevent Ice Dams:

Preventing an ice dam from occurring on your roof can be a lot easier than you may think. Here are a few things you should be doing each year as a method of prevention:

● Roof maintenance – Your roof will wear down over years of wear and tear so staying on top of its maintenance is critical! Pay attention to damaged shingles and clogged gutters. It’s also important to take a good look at your downspouts and ensure they’re clear of snow, ice and debris.
● Insulate the attic – The insulation of your attic is key to avoiding ice dam damage. Insulating your attic will stop heat from rising and causing water to enter your home. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t cover the roof ventilation with insulation!
● Attic ventilation – To avoid having the snow on your roof melt, check the temperature of your attic. If it’s above 32 degrees in the winter, you may have a problem. Keep the attic cool and allow for as much ventilation as possible to avoid any issues related to ice dams.
● Seal and insulate ducts – Cover your exhaust ducts with R-5 or R-6 foil-faced fiberglass to prevent heating of the roof.
● Install ice shields – Before winter begins, install ice shields along the edge of your roof. Ice shields will help stop the ice or snow slide right off your roof. You can also look for a de-icing system to put in place before snow and ice pile up.

Removing Ice Dams:

Although removing ice dams can be difficult, it’s not impossible. There are a few things you can do on your own but they won’t be a permanent fix.

● Get your hands on a roof rake – This will help you to remove any excess snow that sits atop your roof before it melts. You’ll have to stay on top of it throughout the winter months, so remind yourself to check in with the roof on a regular basis.
● Use heating cables – By placing heating cables in a zig-zag pattern along the roof, you should be able to melt the ice and get it off the roof. Make sure to consult a professional before attempting to do this on your own!
● Chip channels through the dam – If you find yourself in a situation where the ice dam is causing leaks in your home, chip channels to allow the rest of the water and ice to fall off the roof. That way, you’ll avoid additional damage.
